Boating Safety Tips

Canine Life jackets

Don't leave home without a life jacket for your paw mate!  Even pets who are strong swimmers need a life jacket - the water could be too rough, the pup could be caught up in a current or undertow, etc.  Download our checklist below to learn the details of selecting a life jacket that works for your paw mate.

Boarding ladders

Make sure your tail wagger can safely get on and off your boat by investing in a doggy boarding ladder.  Ladders are also important for docks & pools to make sure that your pet does not drown.  Download our checklist below to learn about how to select the ladder that will work for your pup, your boat and for you!

Sea Sickness

Many pets get sea sick just like their paw-rents.  Puppies (and children) are more prone to sea sickness due to the inner ear structure used for balance not being fully developed.  Many dogs and humans out grow this problem, but many do not.  Learn the symptoms and treatment of sea sickness in your pup by downloading the checklist  below.

Sun Protection

Yes dogs do get sunburned and need sun protection products.  However, many sunscreens that humans use are toxic to dogs.  The sunscreens for dogs should not contain zinc oxide, PABA or any fragrance.  They should also be waterproof with a minimum 30 SPF.  Not all dogs need sunscreen all over, white haired dogs and dogs who like to lay in the sun on their backs should have a thin layer of sunscreen rubbed on them.  There is also sun blocking clothing available for pups.  Many websites can assist in your search for sun protection for your paw mate.  Happy hunting!

Emergency dog overboard plan

What would you do if your fur-ever pup fell overboard?!  Preparing ahead of time with a simple checklist could be the difference in successfully rescuing your pet.  Please download, laminate and keep our checklist below on your boat in a location where you can quickly locate it.  It could be the difference between life and death of your paw mate!

Come prepared

Pack a boating bag for your pup.  Include in the bag:

  • First-aid kit (see our emergency protection tips to create your own kit);
  • Water & a collapsible water bowl;
  • Potty pads or create a spot for your paw mate to go to the bathroom.

These items along with the items listed above will keep your tail wagger safe and create a fun & rewarding experience.
